Pickup Truck Faceoff: Ram Big Horn vs Silverado LT
As years of automotive models have progressed, we've seen a substantial refinement in the performance and design of the modern pickup truck. This 2022 year is the best yet, and two of our top picks have to be the 2022 Ram 1500 and the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado! Looking at each of these trucks, two trim models that are on the same level and structure layout are the Ram 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab and the Silverado LT Dual Cab. In this review, we'll take a look at the engines offered, and some of the finer design points between each truck to figure out which is our top pick! Keep reading to find out more!
2022 Ram 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab Power & Handling
Looking at the engine selection with the 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab instills confidence with the truck's performance; Ram has put up some impressive benchmarks, especially with the higher end engines. Starting off though is a robust 3.6-liter V6 engine that pushes out 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. It offers Best-in-Class standard V6 horsepower. If you are looking to tow some extreme trailer weights, Ram also offers a HEMI V8 (395 hp, 410 lb-ft) and an EcoDeisel V6 (260 hp, 480 lb-ft) to take the V6's place under the hood. Both of these engines work well with the 1500's supporting powertrain systems, being capable of towing up to 12,750 lbs of trailer weight!
2022 Chevy Silverado LT Double Cab Power & Handling
Chevy looks to place some solid powertrains on the table with the Silverado LT Double Cab in order to give a reliable and strong performance. Under the hood standard with each truck is a 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that has a similar power output to Ram's V6 that the 1500 starts with. Silverado also offers a turbocharged diesel V6 engine that transfers even more power to the tire, with a torque rating of 460 lb-ft. If you are looking for V8 power, there an available 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 that puts out 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. There are some great powertrain options for the LT but the towing capability of the Silverado LT Double Cab just doesn't match what the Big Horn offers.
2022 Ram 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab Features & Design
The interior of Ram trucks recently received a full overhaul, adding in numerous comfort and aesthetic features to make the driving experience more comfortable and convenient. The Big Horn Quad Cab is a great model to start with for the 1500, offering soft cloth seating upholstery with adjustable seats that have lumbar support and great legroom in the back. We also see the interior housing a Uconnect infotainment system housed on an 8.4-inch touchscreen display that is easy to reach and use. Ram also offers a segment-exclusive 12-inch touchscreen to be added on in place, that comes with a split-screen functionality not seen from competitors. On the exterior of the 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab, we are not surprised that Ram has structured the body with a solid-steel framework, that helps to avoid warping when hauling heavy cargo. The 8.7-inch ground clearance serves the truck well, especially if you are looking to take your truck off-road for a task/job.
2022 Chevy Silverado LT Double Cab Features & Design
The Double Cab format for the Silverado LT is the same as the Quad Cab we see from Ram, offering a longer bed and decent passenger capacity. Inside the Silverado LT Double Cab, we see a number of similar features that were seen in the 1500's kit, the infotainment system comes with a touchscreen, but does not offer a larger screen size or as many functions that come with Ram's Uconnect multimedia system. The inside can be a bit tight for rear passengers, having significantly less legroom for rear seating, especially compared to the Ram 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab. The exterior elements of the Silverado LT Dual Cab are where it shines the most, with a strong body and features such as a rear locking tailgate, LED lights, and keyless entry. The Silverado LT Dual Cab has lower ground clearance though compared to the Ram 1500, making it a bit better to keep the Silverado on-road tasks or level terrain.
Conclusion:
The 2022 Chevy Silverado LT Dual Cab offers a solid selection of features that offer a decent driving experience but doesn't quite have the same starting kit and interior rear-passenger volume that we see with the 2022 Ram 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab. The powertrain selection with the Ram 1500 is also superior, offering high-end tow capacities and power outputs while performing well both on and off the road. Overall if we had to pick a winner, it would be the 2022 Ram 1500 Big Horn Quad Cab, for its superior performance and more comfortable riding experience.
